Focus on Business | Katie Rickson

Copywriter - Editor - Mental Health Speaker

As part of a new series designed to inspire, Focus on Business, I will be sharing some success stories of businesses and brands that I have worked with.

Katie Rickson is a wonderfully talented copywriter, editor and public speaker. Auckland based, Katie works with clients all around Aotearoa helping service-based business and not-for-profits with their long-form content. If you need a blog written, words for your website or words written or edited in a myriad of other forms, Katie steps in and effortlessly takes the job under her wing. Katie gives business operators mental freedom by taking over writing tasks and reflecting their values, story and experience with her passion for eloquently laid out words.

Katie came to me to add the visual element to her website and socials. Our initial discovery meeting over a coffee was a familiar type of meeting for both of us. This is how Katie also gets to know her clients, brainstorming ideas and gets her own ideas to flow to work best for her clients. While Katie does this with words, I work in images and colour. Our ideas came together beautifully for how we would make a gallery of images that reflect Katie’s work not only for her service-based writing but her powerful and raw poetry and her public speaking roles.

Katie is softly spoken and considered in her speech, attributes which you know make her work as a copywriter thoughtful and meaningful. This is an approach which gives her clients an unspoken edge over today’s fickle trend hopping and clickbait pretence. The work she produces for her clients will add significant and meaningful value, echoing their unique vision in memorable and effective speech.

Katie has several facets to her business which we wanted to reflect in beautiful and versatile imagery. We needed to create a set of images that reflect Katie’s warm and approachable personality and creative approach to her work, for use throughout her website and socials. Showing your face is the quickest way of building trust and connection with your clients and gives your brand personality.

Our next step was to look at the public speaking side of Katie’s business. Katie holds webinars and presentations for organisations who are passionate about the mental health of their employees, and she has shared her story as guest on several podcasts. She raises awareness of living and thriving with mental illness having lived with bipolar for nearly 20 years. By sharing her story and her strategies for running a business and parenting with bipolar she is determined to raise awareness, reduce stigma and advocate for people living with bipolar.

Katie has just three spots left this quarter for public speaking events, including World Bipolar Day on March 30th. You can find out more about Katie’s public speaking here.
